Senior Minister to take Renewal Leave this Summer

Dear AFUMC Congregation:

On behalf of the Governance Board, we are pleased to share that the Rev. Dr. Stephen Cady has been afforded the opportunity to take a “Renewal Leave” from May 28th to September 6th 2022.  This break can be understood as a brief sabbatical from ministry at Asbury First.

Rest and renewal are deeply entrenched biblical principles; Jesus himself would often take time from active ministry to be with God. In the same way, we want to provide rhythms of rest and restoration to our spiritual leaders. As a Governance Board, we strive to better serve our clergy, and are also reminded of the denominational value placed on the concept of periodic retreat to promote spiritual health.

Believe it or not, the Cady family have been here at Asbury First for 10 years.  While we may be remiss that this has not happened sooner, we are beyond grateful for the inspiration and leadership Stephen has shown us in an era of unprecedented challenge. And, while there is never a perfect time, this summer gives us the chance to show our thanks.

As Stephen steps away temporarily, many others will step in to fulfill his role. We are fortunate that our ministers and staff are more than capable and ready to take on preaching, pastoral care, and administrative responsibilities. We, as a Board, feel very positive about the planning and preparation that has gone in to making this Renewal Leave a success. The Governance Board will also be available to support the ministers and staff in whatever ways necessary during this time.

While Stephen is on his renewal break, he looks forward to spending time connecting with family, friends, and other colleagues in Christ.   Our staff and leaders will learn and grow during this time as they grow in new responsibilities and experience that will assist us not only now, but in our next phase as a Church.  If you are so moved, please ask your ministry leaders how you can help in the months ahead.  Stephen’s last Sunday prior to the break will be May 22nd – please consider attending worship in person as you are able to wish him well personally.

Over this summer, please pray for Stephen, our ministry team, our church, and our denomination. We know that God has the power to work wonders in each of us apart, that will bring us back together better than ever. We collectively are no strangers to doing great things here at Asbury First– and with a fully restored and energized Senior Minister, believe the best is yet to come.
