Children and Family Ministries Coordinator

FTE: Full-time (1.0 FTE)
Reports to: Minister for Nurture and Discipleship
Supervises: Children and Family Ministries volunteers 
Collaborates with: Minister for Nurture and Discipleship, Hospitality Coordinator, Children's Music Director
Compensation: $35 - $50K 

Position Summary
The Children and Family Ministries Coordinator oversees the planning, implementation, and coordination of Christian formation opportunities for children, youth, and their families at Asbury First United Methodist Church. This role supports a vibrant, inclusive, and spiritually enriching environment in which children and families can grow in faith, experience community, and serve together. The position builds strong connections across worship, education, and intergenerational programs.
 
Key Responsibilities

Children’s and Youth Programming

  • Coordinate weekly children’s programming (e.g. Sunday school, Children’s Time, Wednesday evening programming).
  • Coordinate weekly youth programming with the direct support of the Minister for Nurture and Discipleship (e.g. middle and high school youth groups).
  • Work with the Minister for Nurture and Discipleship to plan and implement Children’s Vacation Bible School and Youth Mission Trips.
  • Develop and maintain a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and support leadership teams, volunteer teachers, caregivers, and assistants, along with hiring and scheduling paid nursery and childcare staff.
  • Ensure adherence to Safe Sanctuaries policies, administration of background checks, and child protection best practices.

Family Engagement

  • Cultivate relationships with families to support faith formation at home and within the life of the church.
  • Creating tracking and followup systems for programs. 
  • Work with the Minister for Nurture and Discipleship to communicate weekly with families to highlight the schedule for the coming week, upcoming events, and a brief devotional.
  • Coordinate the planning and implementation for intergenerational events (e.g. Advent/Christmas workshops, Lent activities, family nights).
  • Collaborate with other staff and volunteers to ensure strong communication and follow-up with new families.
  • Coordinate Wednesday Evening activities (e.g. dinner, classes for children and/or families).

Program Development and Evaluation

  • Design or curate curricula and resources aligned with United Methodist theology and best practices in Christian Education.
  • Evaluate Children’s and Family Ministries programs and solicit feedback from families and volunteers.
  • Coordinate milestones in faith development (e.g. Bible presentations, baptism and confirmation acknowledgments).
  • Collaborate with Minister for Nurture and Discipleship to develop and implement a strategic vision for Family Engagement.

Collaboration & Administration

  • Work closely with the Minister for Nurture and Discipleship for seamless faith formation across age groups.
  • Partner with the Children’s Music Director, Youth Music Director, and Theater Director to integrate music and theater into Children’s and Family Ministries programs and worship (e.g. Christmas pageant, children’s musical, youth musical).
  • Maintain digital records for attendance, volunteer training, and program planning.
  • Develop and manage age-level ministry budget in collaboration with the Minister for Nurture and Discipleship.
  • Work with the Minister for Nurture and Discipleship to develop SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) goals through annual evaluations and quarterly check-ins.  

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, theology, Christian formation, or a related field preferred. Seminary education a plus.
  • At least 3 years of experience in children’s ministry, Christian education, or family ministry preferred.
  • Passion for nurturing children’s faith and equipping families to grow together spiritually.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and relational skills.
  • Experience coordinating volunteers and managing multi-program environments.
  • Familiarity with United Methodist theology and practices.
  • CPR/First Aid certification and Safe Sanctuaries training (or willingness to complete upon hire).
     

Hospitality Coordinator

Hours: 10 hours per week (.25 FTE)
Reports to: Minister for Nurture and Discipleship 
Compensation: $10K

Position Summary
The Hospitality Coordinator ensures that members, visitors, and guests experience a warm and welcoming environment at Asbury First United Methodist Church. This role organizes and supports hospitality ministries, co-coordinates volunteers, and helps create a culture of radical welcome across all church activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sunday Morning & Special Event Hospitality
    • Work with Operations Associate to coordinate greeters, ushers, coffee/fellowship hour hosts, and welcome desk volunteers.
    • Ensure hospitality volunteers are scheduled, trained, and supported for worship and major church events (e.g. Wednesday evening programming and funerals).
    • Provide a visible presence of welcome on Sunday mornings.
  • Visitor Connection & Follow-Up
    • Support systems for welcoming first-time guests and helping them connect with ministries.
    • Coordinate follow-up communication with visitors (in partnership with staff and volunteers).
  • Hospitality Volunteer Support
    • Recruit, schedule, and encourage volunteers for hospitality-related roles.
    • Ensure volunteers feel valued and prepared for their service.
  • Culture of Welcome
    • Collaborate with staff to nurture an environment of inclusion and belonging.
    • Provide input on signage, space use, and practices that enhance hospitality.

  • Experience coordinating volunteers preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and ministry leaders.
